Type and size of containers

Standard container, Standard Dry container, Dry container

Standard container is the most widespread type of containers. It is used for transportation of a wide variety of goods, suitable for container storage and doesn’t require compliance with specific transportation demands.

Standard container is a rectangular box of standard size made of channeled plate with two doors on one side. Inside it usually has wooden floor.

Standard marking:

20-feet Standard container: 20 Dry Freight Container, 20 feet, 20 dry, 20 dc.

40-feet Standard container: 40 Dry Freight Container, 40 feet, 40 dry, 40 dc.

40-feet High Cube container: 40 Dry High Cube Container, 40 High Cube, 40 HC.

45-feet High Cube container: 45 Dry High Cube Container, 45 High Cube, 45 HC.

Refrigerated containers, reefers

Reefers are used for transportation of temperature controlled goods, such as deep frozen food products, meat, fish, fresh vegetables, fruits and some chemical substances etc. Reefer has insulated body and cooling installation which can maintain temperature ranging from +25C to -25C. Cooling installation of a reefer works only when being plugged to external current supply available on ships or at ports. To plug the installation while truck services the additional equipment such as diesel generator (Gen Set) is required. Without power supply container works as insulated truck or thermos, preventing a rapid change of cargo temperature due to insulated walls.

Standard marking:

High Cube 40-feet Ref container (the most popular): 40 High Cube Ref Container, 40 HCRef, 40 RC, 40 Ref, 40 RE

40 feet Ref Container (rarely used): 40-feet  Ref Container, 40 Ref, 40 RE.

20 feet Ref Container (rarely used in Russia): 20-feet Ref Container, 20 Ref, 20 RC, 20 RE

Open Top Container, Hard Top Container

Open Top Container is used for transportation of goods which due to their size or any other characteristics can be loaded only vertically (lowered to the container from the top) and for out of gauge cargo, exceeding the standard height of a container.

Open Top Container has lift-off cover. The cover may be in a form of a canvas tent or similar flexible material – Open Top (mainly) or a rigid lift-off cover – Hard Top (less common). For convenience of loading containers are equipped with lift-off beam above doors on container side.

OUG (OOG) or Out of Gauge stowing dimensions exceed stowing dimensions of standard container (goods being out of the edges of a container).

Standard marking:

20 feet Open Top Container: 20 Open Top Container, 20 OP (soft cover), 20 Hard Top Container, 20 HT (rigid cover).

40 feet Open Top Container: 40 Open Top Container, 20 OT (soft cover), 40 Hard Top Container, 20 HT (rigid cover).

Flat Rack

Flat rack is used for out of gauge transportation and/or heavyweights.

It is a standard sized platform (bottom of a container) without top and side walls. End walls are lowered for convenience of loading. It is equipped with special gear for cargo lashing and handling.

OUG (OOG) or Out of Gauge stowing dimensions exceed stowing dimensions of standard container (goods being out of the edges of a container).

Standard marking:

20 feet Flatrack Container: 20 Flatrack Container, 20 FR, 20 FC, 20 FB, 20 PL

40 feet Flatrack Container: 40 Flatrack Container, 40 FR, 40 FC, 40 FB, 40 PL

Tank Container is a cistern, embodied into a metal frame of a standard size, that allows handle it as a 20 feet unit during transportation by different transport modes and storage. Size, volume, weight and material of a cistern may differ considerably due to tank container’s intended use. They are made of neutral for cargo materials. Such containers are equipped with gears for discharging of free flow cargoes as well as cargoes under pressure. They are insulated and have heating installation for unloading of cargoes under refrigeration, may be separated into sections or have jacketed walls for filling them with insulating substances.
